Sean Barrett, Montauk Seaweed Supply Co

Casey Willson Community Stories, latest

Sean Barrett is one of the founders of the Montauk Seaweed Supply Co where he produces biostimulants and fertilizers out of seaweed. He has been active in the fight for community-supported fisheries for over a decade and is a strong opponent of industrial fish farming. He has been working in New York State to advocate for a values-based approach to seafood for 15 years so when Manna Fish Farms proposed a new site off of Hampton Bays, it hit close to home. Now that the operator, a local lawyer and real estate developer, is talking about combining the farm with kelp production, Sean sees through deception. “They try to greenwash industrial fish farming with kelp farming and use that to convince people that they’re sustainable”. Stand with small-scale growers and community members like Sean against industrial fish farming.
