Natalie Parra, Oceanic Preservation Society

Casey Willson Community Stories, latest

Natalie Parra, the Campaign Director at the @oceanicpreservationsociety, has firsthand experience with the effects of offshore fish farming. As a resident of Hawai'i, she witnessed the first offshore fish farm in US waters, the Hukilau Foods operation. As Natalie explains, "I live really close to the fish farm in Hawai'i and I’ve heard a lot of the negative impacts that are already happening. It is important to feed the world but it is really clear to me that OFF is not the way to go about it and it can create entirely new problems." These problems include changes in behavior of bottlenose dolphins and threats to marine mammals such as monk seals, one of which has already been killed after being trapped in an offshore fish farm net.
